As I went window shopping for a new bike,
I met Niño Surban.
Who is he?
To people in the dark about local athletics,
the name will not ring a bell.
But to those who are in the biking circuit,
he is a local hero.
Only 24 years old,
very humble and friendly,
yet he has won in many international biking competitions,
Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia...
The list goes on...
The medals and trophies are all proof of his hard work.
He has been in the Philippine Cycling Team since 2003,
learned how to bike when he was 13,
a gift from a generous Tita,
turned out to be the key that would unlock his dreams.
Biking in Cebu is not a well-funded sport.
Some generous bike enthusiast
support professional bikers like Niño.
Though it is challenging to be a professional biker,
Niño pushes on.
Biking is a great sport,
it is a good way of moving our muscles,
it is also a sustainable form of transportation.
If any of you want to learn how to bike,
drop by Dan's Cycle Shop,
and Niño will be there to guide you,
how to select a bike,
and also how to train.
Thanks Niño for sharing your story!
nino surban is simply cebu's best rider! -rj
