Motorbikes in Ho Chi Minh City

In Ho Chi Minh City, there are 9 million people and 5 million motorbikes. The traffic is almost at a standstill and the bikes are tire to tire with the passengers elbow to elbow. It brings tourists great pride to say that they survived as pedestrians in the Ho Chi Minh City. Crossing the streets there is like being in the crossfire between American G.I.s and the Vietcong during the height of the Vietnam War.

What was really amazing was how they used the bikes as an upgrade to the water buffalo in carrying their personal and logistics related needs. There are two excellent photobooks compiled by Hans Kemp: Bikes of Burden and Bikelihood that show how the Vietnamese people can make the most out of the bike as a logistic resource.

I would like to share a few of my photos.
